Master Data Services

September 1, 2011 - Centralized data that can be analyzed, resulting in better business decisions.

Organizations trying to solve master data problems may try to avoid adding yet another system to manage master data and attempt to build this capability by augmenting an operational system, adding interfaces and processes to an analytic application, or using ETL. They may try some combination of approaches but usually discover the inherent limitations of the systems and tools they are trying to integrate. Neither operational systems nor BI systems were designed to manage master data. Operational systems lack the flexibility to add attributes, manage hierarchies, support a stewardship process, and enforce data quality rules at the speed of business change. How long does it take to add a new attribute or hierarchy to SAP? How much does it cost?

BI systems expect conformed dimensions but do very little to help organizations maintain correct versions of those dimensions over time. BI systems have excellent administrative tools for dimension maintenance but data maintenance (attribute and hierarchies) must be developed independently to support BI systems.

ETL can be leveraged to develop a static authoritative source, but ETL lacks interfaces for data maintenance and assumes that all of the input data is correct and in place.

A master data hub can serve both BI and operational requirements and improve the quality and efficiency of data and processes for all systems.
