What is Master Data Services?

Master Data Services (MDS) is the SQL Server solution for master data management.

Master Data is the identity and attributes of the relatively static "nouns of the business". It is not transactional data, but master data members usually help identify transactions. For example, a purchase order is not master data but a purchase order might be identified by vendor, employee, department, and material code – all master data. Master data is not Metadata and MDS is not a Metadata solution.
